Labor shortage forces Klondike closure
Klondike Academy, a learning center for preschoolers, has announced its closure after four years of operation. One of the owners and acting manager, Pamela Reynolds, says labor shortages have forced her and the shortages are affecting children’s learning centers in the area. “You need people with the right certifications to run a place like this and the regulatory oversight isn’t minimal,” she said. “With this and the difficulty of recruiting staff, the time has come to close.” Photo by Junius Stone / Texarkana Gazette.
TEXARKANA, Texas Klondike Academy, a daycare here, will close on May 28 after four years of operation. Pamela Reynolds, acting manager and one of the owners, says they made these decisions after realizing they just didn’t have the staff to keep operations going.
“With the challenges of the current labor pool, we just can’t find the people we need to make it work,” she said. “To be on the staff of a place like this you need people with the right credentials. And we pride ourselves on our high standards here. I care about the children and have to do my best to lead the Klondike Academy. “
According to Reynolds, the staff shortage that currently affects many labor pools in the region is also affecting child care and preschool. She says many such facilities in the region are experiencing similar shortages.
“I’m afraid my kids don’t have a place to go,” she says. “They are all short-staffed now.”
Reynolds herself wears more than one hat, as interim manager.
“We lost our director recently, April Green, a great girl,” Reynolds said. “We were having trouble finding a new one. You can’t run a daycare center without a daycare center. We looked as far as Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Dallas. Not one with the qualifications we need is currently available.
Reynolds says the standards set by the state create some of the difficulty.
“In addition to the complications created by COVID, the state sets certification standards as well as the teacher-to-child ratio,” she said. “Not the schools.”
Reynolds does not plan to reopen the Klondike Academy.
